Welcome!

I’m Wendy, and I created Plantivores in 2013, two years after my family and I switched to a plant-based lifestyle.

Starting a plant-based, whole foods lifestyle can at first seem daunting and overwhelming. It was definitely a steep learning curve for me and I almost gave up several times in those first months. Luckily (??) I got laid off from my job shortly after and had a few months to spend researching how to cook plant-based, how to build meals without animal proteins and where to find new recipes.

I’ve had many people say to me “Wow, you are so dedicated, I could never switch my diet like that. It is too hard and daunting.” So I decided to create a place where people can learn how to do this in a shorter time-frame than it took me.

My husband and I live in Denver, Colorado with our two boys and our dog, Yogi.

Our goal at Plantivores is to help make a plant-based, whole foods lifestyle more accessible, convenient and sustainable.

We are committed to educating, inspiring, and connecting you with comprehensive resources, tools, products, and services to support your Plantivore journey and plant-based whole foods lifestyle.

We want to hear from you. Subscribe to get involved and receive updates from us. Give us input, tell us what you want to see on this site. Make suggestions. Be a part of the Plantivores community.

Fascinating to learn that you and your family made the switch to a plant based diet. I’ve been intrigued by its benefits for some time but I’ve hesitated to accept it because 1) is the plant based protein quality and quantity enough and 2) it’s socially limiting in that most people eat meat.
Is it all or none? Do some plantivores occasionally eat meat products?
Recently I saw an interview of a 100 year old man who described himself as feeling his best today as he ever felt in his life. At age 60 he made the change to a plant based diet. If he could do such at 60, I thought I owed it to myself at least to find out more.

Hi Don. I’m happy to chat with you more about eating a plant-based diet. I ran a faster half marathon last year when I turned 50 than I did when I was in “the best shape of my life” at age 35 (pre-children). There are numerous benefits and once you start eating this way your taste buds change and foods that you didn’t previously care for suddenly become delicious!

There is a learning curve for sure. I have a document I put together to help people get started. Happy to send it to you.

Regarding being vegan and still interacting with the general public, that can be a challenge for sure. But there are ways to manage it. And one can choose to be plant-based however they wish. If that means that on occasion you have some meat at a business meeting or social gathering (or because you just want to), so be it! We are the family who carts large amounts of food to social gatherings (because we are also gluten-free and 2 of us have soy allergies) and always bring enough to share.

I am a believer in approaching these things in any way that one feels most comfortable and most likely to stick with it.

Also, if you eat enough calories to live on, you will get more than enough protein eating a plant-based diet. Vegetables, whole grains and legumes have plenty of protein.
